Former special assistant to Chief MKO Abiola, Chief Olu Akerele, has condoled with the government and people of Ekiti State and the entire Nigeria over the death of erudite economist, Professor Sam Aluko.

In a condolence message to the Ekiti State governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, Akerele noted that the late Professor Aluko had played a prominent role in the growth of the economy at various levels.

He said the nation’s economy did not collapse during the profligate General Sani Abacha administration simply because Professor Aluko had accepted to serve the late dictator as chairman of finance and economic intelligence committee.

He said Aluko’s patriotic zeal to salvage the nation from certain economic catastrophe made him to accept the appointment.

Akerele also condoled with the nation on the deaths of Alhaji Abdul-kadir Dantata and Dr Mathew Mbu.

He pointed out that these cases of death were losses to the nation, at a time the country was trying to put its act together after years of dwindling fortunes.

Also, a former commissioner of works and infrastructure in Ekiti State, Mr Olatunde Olatunji, has described the death of Professor Samuel Aluko as shocking, saying that the late professor of economics “will be remembered for his humility, simple lifestyle and a visible spirit of contentment.”

In a statement he made available to the Nigerian Tribune on Thursday, he described the late Professor Aluko as “another rare breed of Nigeria, who has gone to rest after a hard days labour.”

Olatunji said “unknown to many, Professor Aluko devoted substantial daily hour to the care of less privileged. He spent greater part of his latter life in granting daily attention to numerous Nigerians who called on him for one type of assistance or the other.
